Imaratee and Jalebi (sometimes Jalibi^[1]) (jilebi, Hindi: जलेबी, Urdu: جلیبی, Punjabi: ਜਲੇਬੀ jalebī; Bengali: জিলাপী jilapi; Persian: زولبیا zoolbia; Arabic: zalabiyah) is a Persian sweet popular in countries of the Indian Subcontinent such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. It is made by deep-frying batter in pretzel or circular shapes, which are then soaked in syrup.

The sweets are served warm or cold. They have a somewhat chewy texture with a crystallized sugary exterior coating. Citric acid or lime juice is sometimes added to the syrup, as well as rosewater or other flavours such as kewra water.

A similar sweet is imarti, which is red-orange in color and sweeter in taste, made in North Indian states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. A variant Chhena Jalebi, made with chhena, is popular in parts of Rajasthan, Bengal, and Orissa, though the form can differ significantly from place to place.

In India Jalebi is served as the Celebration Sweet of India, popular during national holidays like Independence Day and Republic Day, on which it is supplied in government offices, defence facilities, and other organisations. Similarly, Jalebi is one of the most popular sweets in Pakistan. It is used as a remedy for headaches in some parts of Pakistan, where it is placed in boiling milk and left to stand before eating.

The earliest written references to the sweet are found in a 13th century cookbook by Muhammad bin Hasan al-Baghdadi. In Iran, where it is known asZlebia, the sweet was traditionally given to the poor during Ramadan. It likely arrived in the Indian subcontinent during the period of Muslim rule, through cultural diffusion and trade, and its local name is Jalebi as Z is replaced by J in most Indian languages.

One of the earliest known Indian references for the sweet exists in a Jain work — Priyamkarnrpakatha — by Jinasura, apparently composed in AD 1450. This work was subsequently cited in cookery books published in later centuries including the 17th-century classic Bhojan-kutuhala by Raghunatha. So one can say with some measure of certainty that the jalebi has existed in the Indian subcontinent for at least 500 years.^[2]

Tau Suan is a warm dessert. Split mung beans are soaked overnight in water before being steamed until semi-soft.

The beans t0gether with some sugar are added to a pot of water and boiled until the beans are soft but not mushy. Cornstarch is made into a watery paste and poured in to the soup to thicken a little but not gooey. Tau Suan is usually served with bite size pieces of Yau Char Kwai to give the dish a savoury touch.

Film director Yasmin Ahmad dies

KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning film director Yasmin Ahmad (pic) has died from massive bleeding in the brain at the Damansara Specialist Hospital.

She died at 11.25pm yesterday. She had undergone surgery following her collapse at the TV3 headquarters Seri Pentas on Thursday.

The 51-year-old movie maker was famed for her advertisements and films capturing the essence of racial harmony in Malaysia.

Relatives, loved ones and a large group of luminaries from the local movie and television scene gathered at the hospital the moment they heard about her death.

Among the first to arrive were veteran actress Fatimah Abu Bakar – a close friend of Yasmin – and Media Prima International CEO Datuk Seri Farid Ridzuan.

Although distraught, those present paid tribute to the award-winning director.

“We would come cross a few great people in our time on earth. Yasmin was one of them.
“She wasn’t an easy person to live or work with, but that was only because she was so talented.
“She had a big heart and vision that we usually don’t understand. That was why people misunderstood her. But she never intended any malice,” said Fatimah.

She added Yasmin’s films had always been about love and forgiveness because that was the way her parents brought her up.

Fatimah’s daughter, Sharifah Amani, who acted in Yasmin’s films, was too distraught as she stood by at her mother’s side.
She refused to talk to the press.

Fatimah and Farid acted as the spokespersons for Yasmin’s family to announce her death and details of her funeral.

TV host Aznil Nawawi, said he had always admired Yasmin’s work although he never had a chance to work with her.
“She possessed the knack on how to capture the essence of Malaysia through her movies and commercials.
“I last saw her when she was promoting her movie Talentime at the Radio Era office,” he added.

Suria FM chief executive officer Engku Imran Engku Zainal Abidin described Yasmin’s death as a great loss – not only to the entertainment and movie industry, but to the nation as a whole.
“Her movies are watched by all races because they can all relate to the messages conveyed.
“We have lost a great, intelligent and creative director,” he added.

Yasmin will be buried after Zohor prayers today, although at press time the location of the burial has yet to be determined.

Fatimah said Yasmin’s body would be taken to the SS19 Mosque in Subang Jaya for prayers.

Since Dad left us 2+ years ago (he passed away suddenly in October 7, 2007), we have no opportunity to celebrate Father's Day. But this year we decided to celebrate with our favorite Uncle i.e. Mom's brother.

So Bro-in-Law suggested a Restaurant somewhere in USJ Industrial Zone. At 7pm, Sis, Bro-in-Law, Uncle J, Aunty R, Cousins (M & T), Princess & I were already there & that place was packed. "Billie Jean," "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin,'" "Bad," "Man in the Mirror," "Beat It," "P.Y.T." His album "Thriller" had nine songs; seven of them became hit singles. He became much imitated, from his hair to his clothes to his dance moves. (CNN) -- Entertainer Michael Jackson died after being taken to a hospital on Thursday having suffered cardiac arrest, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner's office.

Paramedics took Jackson, 50, from his west Los Angeles home Thursday afternoon to UCLA Medical Center, where a team of physicians attempted to resuscitate him for more than an hour, said brother Jermaine Jackson. He said the famed singer was pronounced dead at 2:26 p.m. PT.

An autopsy is scheduled Friday, he said. Results are expected Friday afternoon, according to Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles coroner's office, who also said Jackson was unresponsive when he arrived at the hospital.

Fire Capt. Steve Ruda told CNN paramedics were sent to a west Los Angeles, California, residence after a 911 call came in at 12:21 p.m.

Law enforcement officials said the Los Angeles Police Department Robbery-Homicide Division opened an investigation into Jackson's death. They stressed there is no evidence of criminal wrongdoing but that they would conduct interviews with family members and friends.
CNN Analyst Roland S. Martin spoke on Thursday with Marlon Jackson, brother of Michael Jackson.

"I talked to Frank Dileo, Michael's manager. Frank told me that Michael last night was complaining about not feeling well. He called to tell him he wasn't feeling well.
"Michael's doctor went over to see him, and Frank said, 'Marlon, from last night to this morning, I don't know what happened.' When they got to him this morning, he wasn't breathing. They rushed him to the hospital and couldn't bring him around."

"Janet Jackson is grief-stricken and devastated at the sudden loss of her brother," Kenneth Crear, her manager said. "She is ... flying immediately to California to be with her family."

Michael Jackson, the music icon from Gary, Indiana, was known as the "King of Pop." Jackson had many No. 1 hits, and his "Thriller" is the best-selling album of all time.

Jackson was the seventh of nine children from a well-known musical family. He is survived by three children, Prince Michael I, Paris and Prince Michael II.

Jackson's former wife, Lisa Marie Presley, said she was "shocked and saddened" by Jackson's death. "My heart goes out to his children and his family," she said.
At the medical center, every entrance to the emergency room was blocked by security guards. Even hospital staffers were not permitted to enter. A few people stood inside the waiting area, some of them crying.

Some of Jackson's music was being played outside. The sounds of "Thriller" and "Beat It" bounced off the walls.

Outside Jackson's Bel Air home, police arrived on motorcycles. The road in front of the home was closed in an attempt to hold traffic back, but several people were gathered outside the home.

Along with his success Jackson had some legal troubles later in his career. He was acquitted of child molestation charges after a well-publicized trial in Santa Maria, California, in March 2006. Prosecutors charged the singer with four counts of lewd conduct with a child younger than 14; one count of attempted lewd conduct; four counts of administering alcohol to facilitate child molestation; and one count of conspiracy to commit child abduction, false imprisonment or extortion.

Growing to about 21 metres, the Jering, as it is known locally, has smooth, pale grey bark. The most striking feature of this tree is the massive purplish-brown pods that suspend coiled from its branches. The pods, that measure 20 to 25 cm long and 5 cm wide, are used to extract purple dyes to colour silk. As part of traditional medicinal usage, the Jering seeds are extolled for preventive diabetes and high blood pressure. And as a remedy to eliminate stones from the bladder, a decoction of finely pound ginger, Jering seeds and water, is consumed.

Jering dikelaskan sebagai racun serdahana kerana ia mempunyai asid djenkolic, asid amino, yang menyebabkan keracunan Jering (djenkolism - jengkol bean poisoning). Ia menyebabkan "sakit mencucuk/berdenyut (spasmodic pain), penyakit gout, salur kencing tersekat dan kegagalan renal akut (acute renal failure)". Keadaan ni biasanya menyerang lelaki, dan tidak ditentukan oleh cara penyediaan jering, dan merekayang memakannya banyak kali tanpa apa-apa kesan, mungkin mendapat kegagalan renal pada satu ketika lain.
